About the Chief Technology Officer — Dewitt Latimer

Assistant Vice President/Assistant Provost Dewitt Latimer joined the University of Notre Dame in August, 2002 as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Deputy CIO. In this capacity, he has operational oversight of the IT infrastructure and serves as the University's chief IT strategist.

Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Dr. Latimer was Executive Director of Statewide IT Infrastructure for The University of Tennessee where he had been since 1997. In this capacity, Dr. Latimer had responsibility for the communications infrastructure, middleware, operations, IT security and data integrity, and business process recovery for the University in Knoxville as well as the Health Sciences Center in Memphis. At UT, he headed a number of significant projects including Nomad - UT's wireless deployment of over 1200 access points covering 15 million square feet of academic and administrative buildings at the University completed in August of 2001. Moreover, he oversaw a $20M redesign of the University's communications infrastructure as well as a multi-million dollar expansion of the operations center.

Dr. Latimer has been a leader in higher education's national networking efforts for more than a decade and has played a key role in shaping higher education's position on national information technology policy issues. He serves on numerous national committees and currently is co-Chair of the EDUCAUSE Net@EDU Wireless Working Group, moderator of the wireless LAN constituent group, member of the Educause SAC Board and SAC 2003 Program Committee, as well as member of Educause's Nomination and Elections Committee.

In a professional career that spans nearly two decades, Dr. Latimer was previously director of Academic Computing and Technology at Kent State University and Director of Information Technology, Clemson University College of Engineering and Sciences.

Dr. Latimer received a BS and MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and a Ph.D. in Education Higher Education Administration from The University of Tennessee. Born in Pinehurst, North Carolina, and native of Greenville, South Carolina, Dewitt, his wife, and their 4 children live in Granger. He is an avid golfer and wood worker in his spare time.
