Modifying Email Auto-Filters

Most email programs have automatic junk or spam filtering features to identify incoming mail as potential spam, and may redirect it without your explicit knowledge to a Junk or Trash folder. Although this feature may seem useful, it could cause you to overlook legitimate and potentially time-sensitive email. To reduce or eliminate the risk of this undesired redirection, follow the instructions below for the supported email client that you currently use.

Eudora v. 6 - Windows
Eudora v. 6 - Macintosh
Thunderbird
Outlook
Outlook Express
Windows Mail
Mac OSX Mail
Entourage
WebMail

Eudora v. 6 - Windows
Please note: Qualcomm has stopped development and support for Eudora.  Due to lack of vendor support for Eudora, the OIT recommends that you migrate to another email client.  Please contact your departmental IT support or the OIT Help Desk (631-8111) for assistance.

To turn off junk mail filtering:

  1. Select on Tools -> Options -> Junk.
  2. Move the junk mail slider all the way to 100
  3. Select Mail isn't junk if sender is in address book
  4. Uncheck the following if checked:
        Automatically place junk in junk mailbox
        Junk mail is never marked unread
        Remove mail that is at least 30 days old
  5. Click Tools-> Options -> junk mail extras
  6. Uncheck Delete fetched junk mail from server
  7. Click OK

To add all nd.edu domain to the address book:

  1. Click on the Address Book in the toolbar.
  2. Click on the New button.
  3. Enter a Nickname for the entry.
  4. Add *@nd.edu
  5. Close the Address Book.
  6. Click Save in the Save changes to Address Book? dialog box.
  7. Click on Tools > Options > Junk Mail
  8. Make sure there is a check-mark in the box next to Mail isn't junk if the sender is in an address book.
  9. Click OK

Eudora v. 6 - Macintosh

  1. Click on the Address Book in the toolbar.
  2. Click on the Entry button.

  6. Click Save in the Save changes to "Address Book"? dialog box.
  7. Click on Eudora > Preferences> Junk Mail.
  8. Make sure there is a check-mark in the box next to Mail isn't junk if the sender is in an address book.
  9. Click OK

Thunderbird 2.0

  1. Click on Tools
  2. Click on Account Settings
  3. FOR EACH ACCOUNT THAT IS SET UP Click Junk Settings
  4. Uncheck (clear) the box for Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account
  5. Click on OK

Outlook

  1. Click on Tools
  2. Click on Options
  3. Click on the Junk E-mail button
  4. Select the option for No Automatic Filtering
  5. Click on OK

Outlook Express

Outlook Express does not have an option for junk filtering. Outlook Express only filters messages setup by the user.

Windows Mail for Vista

Disabling junk mail filtering by Windows Mail:

  1. Click on the Tools menu.
  2. Click on Junk E-mail Options...
  3. Select the option for "No Automatic Filtering."
  4. Click OK.

To allow Windows Mail to keep filtering junk mail, but exempt mail from Notre Dame senders from being filtered:

  1. Click on the Tools menu.
  2. Click on Junk E-mail Options...
  3. Click on the Safe Senders tab.
  4. Click on the Add... button.
  5. Type "nd.edu" (without quotes) in the box.
  6. Click OK.

Mac OS X Mail

  1. Open Mac OS X Mail (Often denoted by a Stamp on the Dock).
  2. On the Apple bar at the top of your screen select 'Mail'.
  3. Click on preferences; this will open the General options window.
  4. Click on the Junk Mail icon at the top of the window.
  5. Ensure that the check box "Enable junk mail filtering" is unchecked.
  6. Close the Options window by clicking the red circle.

Entourage 2004

  1. Click on Tools -> Junk E-mail Protection
  2. Click on "None" to disable junk filtering.
  3. Click Ok.

To keep Junk filtering, but exempt mail from Notre Dame senders from being filtered:

  1. Click on Tools -> Junk E-Mail Protection
  2. Click on the "Safe Domains" tab
  3. Enter "nd.edu" in the Safe Domains box.
  4. Click Ok.

WebMail
WebMail does not have automatic filters, but if you wish to turn off filters you have previously configured, follow these instructions:

  1. Login with your NetID and password to http://webmail.nd.edu
  2. Select 'Options' at the top of the screen.
  3. On the Options screen click on 'Filters' under the 'Mail Management' heading.
  4. Once on the Filters screen un-check all 3 boxes located under the 'Filters' heading.
  5. Select the 'Save Options' button and you will then be returned to the main options screen.
  6. Click on 'INBOX' in the top left of your screen to go back to your Inbox.
