Upgrade to Mac OS X Eudora v. 6 for POP Email

Please note: Qualcomm has stopped development and significantly limited support for Eudora.

NOTE: In order to ensure that Eudora is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!

Upgrade to Eudora 6

  1. Download the Eudora 6 Installer. Then double-click on the Eudora 6 Updater. (You will need to sign in with your NetID and password in order to download the compressed installer file.)

  2. Click the Continue button.
  3. Click Continue again after reading the instructions.
  4. Click Install on the next window

    Note: If you are asked which Eudora Settings file to use during the installation:
    • Click off the installer onto the desktop.

    • Press Command + F.
    • Do a search for: Eudora Settings
    • Look in the Date Modified column and choose the one that has the most recent date, this is the one you last used.
    • Look in the bottom part of the window and see where the file is found.
    • Go back to the Eudora installer and look at the bottom part of this window, choose the Eudora settings file that is in the same location as the most recent one you found in your search.

    • Click Select.
  5. Click Quit in the window saying the installation was successful. Now continue with the instructions below to configure Eudora correctly.

Note: Can't find Eudora? If you don't have a shortcut on your Desktop or Dock, you can open Eudora by going to Mac HD > Applications > Eudora Application Folder.

Configuring Eudora 6

  1. Open Eudora.

  2. Go to the Special menu and then click on Settings.
  3. In the Getting Started category enter the following information:
    • Username: Your NetID (e.g., asmith)
    • Real Name: Your First and Last Name (e.g., Anne Smith)
    • Return Address: The preferred version of your e-mail address (e.g., asmith@nd.edu)
  4. Click on the Checking Mail category on the left hand side of the Settings window.
  5. Change the Mail Host to: pop.nd.edu
  6. Change the Mail Protocol to: POP

  7. When asked if you really want to change to POP, click Convert to POP.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Go to the File menu and click Check Mail.
  10. Enter the password for your account when asked and click OK.
  11. The first time you check mail you will be asked if you want to add the SSL certificate for pop.nd.edu to your Keychain. Click OK and you will not be asked again in the future.
  12. Go back to the File menu and click Check Mail again.
  13. Now go to the Message menu and choose New Message and send a test message to yourself. Mac OS X Eudora 6 Certificate Alert
  14. Click Send.
  15. Like the first time you check mail, you will be asked if you want to add an SSL certificate for smtp.nd.edu to your Keychain the first time you send mail, click OK .

  16. Go back to the File menu and click Check Mail again to force Eudora to send the test message.
  17. Wait a few seconds and Check Mail again to see if you received your test message.

Eudora is now set up to securely transmit your login information to send and receive mail and is already configured to work with the ND Directory Service.
