Setup Netscape 7 for POP Email
Please follow the instructions below to setup your Netscape v. v.7.01 (or higher) to access your Notre Dame email account.
Note: If you are using Netscape v. 7.00, please upgrade your Netscape version to 7.01 or higher. The ND email system does not support Netscape v.7.00.
- With Netscape Messenger open (you MUST have the email client itself open, not just the browser), click on the Edit menu, and select Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings.
- Select the Add Account button near the lower left corner of the account settings dialog.
- Select the Email Account radio button. Click Next.
- Fill in your preferred name in the Name field, and your preferred Notre Dame email address in the Email Address field (e.g. asmith@nd.edu, anne.r.smith.2@nd.edu, or smith.2@nd.edu). Click Next.
- Select the POP radio button. For the Incoming Server, fill in: pop.nd.edu Click Next.
- For the User Name, fill in your Net ID (also known as your AFS ID). Click Next.
- Select a descriptive Account Name (e.g. Anne's ND Acct). Click Next. Click Finish.
- Next, select Server Settings from the subcategories
on the left under your newly created account.

- Make sure that:
- your server name is set to pop.nd.edu
- Your user name is your Net ID (also known as your AFS ID).
- Place a check in the box for Use secure connection (SSL)
- Select the Copies & Folders option on the left.
- Place a check in the box for Place a copy in.
- Select "Sent" folder on: and choose Local Folders from the drop down menu.
- Now click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option on
the left of the Mail & Newsgroups Settings dialog.
- Make sure that the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
- For the Port field, type in: 587
- Check the box for Use name and password. For the User Name field, use your NetID (also known as your AFS ID).
- Select the Always radio button under the Use secure connection (SSL): section. (Note: This step differs slightly if you are using Netscape 7.2 -- you will instead want to choose the TLS radio button.)
- Click OK again on the Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings window.
Now you can receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
If you would also like to setup Netscape to work with the Notre Dame directory service so that you can look for ND email addresses within the Netscape mail client, follow these instructions:
To setup Netscape Mail to access the Notre Dame Directory (Macintosh & Windows):
- Start Netscape. Make sure you are in the Mail client. If you are not in Mail, select Tasks > Mail.
- From the Edit menu, select Mail/News Account Settings.
- In the Account Settings dialog, click on the Addressing option (Composing & Addressing for Netscape 7.2 users) under your Notre Dame account.
- Select the radio button Use a different LDAP server :
- If ND Directory is listed in the adjacent pull down menu then select it and you are done, otherwise click the Edit Directories button.
- In the LDAP Directory Servers dialog click the Add button.
- Use the following settings:
- Name: ND Directory
- Hostname: directory.nd.edu
- Base DN: o="University of Notre Dame",st=Indiana,c=US
- Click OK .
- In the LDAP Directory Servers dialog click OK .
- In the Account Settings dialog click OK .
- From the Edit menu, select Preferences to open user preferences.
- Open Mail and Newsgroups and click on Addressing .
- In the Address Auto completion section choose: Check Directory Server
- In the pop-up menu select: ND Directory
- Click OK to save your preferences.
After establishing these settings, when typing an e-mail address the ND Directory will be searched. Often a first initial, followed by an asterisk "*" and a space and then the first few letters of a last name will be enough to retrieve a person's complete email address in a menu.
