Security (SSL and SMTP Authentication) Setup on Existing Netscape 7 for IMAP Email Client

NOTE: In order to ensure that Netscape Email is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!

  1. With Netscape Messenger open (you MUST have the email client itself open, not just the browser), click on the Edit menu, and select Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings.
  2. Next, select Server Settings from the subcategories on the left under your Notre Dame account.
    Netscape imap
  3. Make sure that:
    • your server name is set to imap.nd.edu
    • Your user name is your Net ID (also known as your AFS ID).
    • Place a check in the box for Use secure connection (SSL)
  4. Now click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option on the left of the Mail & Newsgroups Settings dialog.

    Netscape SMTP
  1. Make sure that the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
  2. For the Port field, type in:  587
  3. Place a check in the box for use name and password.
  4. Check the box for Use name and password. For the User Name field, use your NetID (also known as your AFS ID).
  5. Select the TLS radio button under the Use secure connection section.  (Note:  This step differs slightly if you are using Netscape 7.1 -- you will instead want to choose the Always radio button.)
  6. Click OK again on the Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings window.

Now you can securely receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
