Security (SSL and SMTP Authentication) Setup on Existing Netscape 7 for IMAP Email Client
NOTE: In order to ensure that Netscape Email is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!
- With Netscape Messenger open (you MUST have the email client itself open, not just the browser), click on the Edit menu, and select Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings.
- Next, select Server Settings from the subcategories
on the left under your Notre Dame account.

- Make sure that:
- your server name is set to imap.nd.edu
- Your user name is your Net ID (also known as your AFS ID).
- Place a check in the box for Use secure connection (SSL)
- Now click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option on
the left of the Mail & Newsgroups Settings dialog.

- Make sure that the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
- For the Port field, type in: 587
- Place a check in the box for use name and password.
- Check the box for Use name and password. For the User Name field, use your NetID (also known as your AFS ID).
- Select the TLS radio button under the Use secure connection section. (Note: This step differs slightly if you are using Netscape 7.1 -- you will instead want to choose the Always radio button.)
- Click OK again on the Mail & Newsgroups Accounts Settings window.
Now you can securely receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
