Instructions for Outlook Express & Outlook 2000 POP Settings

Note for Outlook 2000 Users!  Be sure to install all service packs for Office 2000 BEFORE setting up Outlook for email at Notre Dame.

  1. Open up Outlook Express or Outlook and go to Tools
  2. Click on Accounts
  3. Choose Add and then Mail
  4. The Add New Account wizard will open.
  5. Enter your name and click Next.
  6. Enter your e-mail address and click Next
  7. For the server information choose the following:
    • My Incoming Mail Server is a POP3 server.
    • Incoming mail server is: pop.nd.edu
    • Outgoing mail server: smtp.nd.eduInternet Connection Wizard Screenshot
  8. Click Next.
  9. Enter your Account name, which is your NetID and password if desired and then click Next
  10. Click Finish
  11. In the Accounts Window, select the newly created account and click on the Properties button
  12. Go to the Servers tab

  13. Place a check in the box for My server requires authentication
  14. Now click on the Advanced tab

  15. Place a check mark in both the incoming and outgoing mail sections for This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
  16. Change the Outgoing mail port to 465
  17. Click OK and then Close

To setup Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 to work with the ND Directory:

  1. With Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 open, go to the Tools menu, and select Accounts
  2. Click the Directory Service tab
  3. Click the Add button and select Directory Service to open the Internet Connection Wizard
  4. For the Internet directory (LDAP) server, use: directory.nd.edu
  5. Click Next
  6. Check Yes to use the directory service for e-mail addressing. Click Next
  7. Click Finish to create the ND Directory account
  8. Click once on directory.nd.edu and click the Properties button
  9. Select the Advanced tab, and fill in the following information:
    Search base: dc=nd,dc=edu
  10. Click OK to save directory properties
  11. Click the Set Order button
  12. Move directory.nd.edu to the top of the list.
  13. Click OK
  14. Click Close

After establishing these settings you will be able to enter a partial name when addressing e-mail and use the Check Names command on the Tools menu to search the ND-EDS directory for matches. Outlook Express users will be limited to displaying only the directory attributes that Microsoft defines. If using Windows 2000 you will also be able to search ND-EDS by selecting the Search for People option from the Start button on the Windows taskbar.
