Instructions for Creating Security (SSL and SMTP Authentication) Settings for Existing Outlook XP(2002)/2003 IMAP Setup
NOTE for Outlook XP Users! Be sure to install all service packs for Office XP BEFORE setting up Outlook for email at Notre Dame.
In order to ensure that Outlook is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!
- With Outlook open, click on the Tools menu, and select Email Accounts.
- Under Email choose View or change existing email account and click Next.
- Highlight your Notre Dame account and click Change
- Click the More Settings button.
- In the Internet E-mail Settings dialog that appears, click the Outgoing
Server tab.

- Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and then select the radio button for Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Now click on the Advanced tab. Then make sure that:
- Under the Incoming server and Outgoing server sections, place a check in the boxes for This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- For the Outgoing server (SMTP) field, change the default port number to: 465
- The Root folder path field is blank (nothing in it).
- Click OK, then click Next, and then click Finish.
Now you can securely receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
