Setup Outlook XP(2002)/2003 for IMAP Email

Note for Outlook XP Users!  Be sure to install all service packs for Office XP BEFORE setting up Outlook for email at Notre Dame.

Please follow the instructions below to setup your Outlook XP(2002)/2003 email client to access your Notre Dame email account.

  1. With Outlook open, click on the Tools menu, and select Email Accounts.
  2. Select Add a new email account and click Next.
  3. Select the IMAP radio button. Click Next.
  4. An Email Accounts dialog will appear. Enter the following information:
    • E-mail Address: Your preferred Notre Dame email address (e.g. asmith@nd.edu, anne.r.smith.2@nd.edu, or smith.2@nd.edu)
    • Incoming Mail server (IMAP) is: imap.nd.edu
    • Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) is: smtp.nd.edu
    • User Name is: your Net ID (also known as your AFS ID)

  5. Then, click the More Settings button.
  6. In the Internet E-mail Settings dialog that appears, click the Outgoing Server tab.

  7. Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and then select the radio button for Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
  8. Now click on the Advanced tab. Then make sure that:
    • Under the Incoming server and Outgoing server sections, place a check in the boxes for This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
    • For the Outgoing server (SMTP) field, change the default port number to:  465
    • The Root folder path field is blank (nothing in it).

  9. Click OK, then click Next, and then click Finish.

Now you can receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.

To setup Outlook to access the ND Directory:

  1. With Outlook open, click on the Tools menu, and select Email Accounts.
  2. Select the radio button for Add a new directory or address book. Then click Next.
  3. Select the radio button for Internet Directory Service (LDAP).  Then click Next.
  4. Fill in the Server Name field with:  directory.nd.edu
  5. Click the More Settings... button.
  6. In the Microsoft LDAP Directory dialog that appears, click on the Search tab. 
  7. In the Search base field, type:  dc=nd,dc=edu
  8. Click OK.
  9. You'll be returned to the original directory setup dialog.  Click on the Next button.
  10. Now click Finish.
  11. Open the Address book.  Then go to the Tools menu, and select Options
  12. Add Notre Dame to "when sending mail, check names using these address lists."
  13. Click OK.

The ND Directory is now available for you to find email addresses.  Simply type in a name in the To: field of an email message, then click the Check Names button check names button in the tool bar.
