Instructions for Creating Security (SSL and SMTP Authentication) Settings for Existing Outlook XP(2002)/2003 for POP Setup
NOTE for Outlook XP Users! Be sure to install all service packs for Office XP BEFORE setting up Outlook for email at Notre Dame.
NOTE: In order to ensure that Outlook is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!
- With Outlook open, click on the Tools menu, and select Email Accounts.
- Under Email choose View or change existing email account and click Next.
- Highlight your Notre Dame account and click Change
- Then, click the More Settings button.
- In the Internet E-mail Settings dialog that appears, click the Outgoing
Server tab.

- Select My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and then select the radio button for Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Now click on the Advanced tab. Then make sure that:
- Under the Incoming server and Outgoing server sections, place a check in the boxes for This server requires a secure connection (SSL).
- For the Outgoing server (SMTP) field, change the default port number to: 465
- The Root folder path field is blank (nothing in it).
- Click OK, then click Next, and then click Finish.
Now you can securely receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
