Problems Sending After Changing To SMTP Authentication & SSL

Note: If your Norton Antivirus definition (DAT) files are out of date, you should update them immediately!

Systems with Norton Antivirus installed on them and running, usually have an outgoing email scanning function turned on by default. This will intercept the send mail request and attempt to forward it through Norton's servers which do not support SSL. In order to be able to send mail under this new configuration, you will need to turn this feature off using the instructions below.

  1. Locate and double-click the Norton Antivirus icon Norton System Tray Iconin your system tray (by the clock).
    Norton AV Window
  2. When the Norton Antivirus Window appears, click on the Options button at the top.
  3. When the Options dialog appears, under the Internet heading, click on the Email subheading and remove the check from Scan outgoing Email (it is not necessary to uncheck the "Scan incoming Email" option).
    Norton Email Scanning
  4. Click OK to save this change and close the Norton Antivirus window. You should now be able to send email under the new configuration.

Turning the outgoing Email scanning option off does not compromise your email security as the Notre Dame mail server through which you are sending scans all email sent through it.
