Security Setup on Existing Thunderbird v.1.5 for POP Email Client

NOTE: In order to ensure that Thunderbird email is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!

  1. With Thunderbird open, go to the Tools menu, and select Account Settings.
  2. Next, select Server Settings from the subcategories on the left under your Notre Dame account.

  3. Make sure that:
    • your server name is set to pop.nd.edu
    • Your user name is your NetID
    • Under the Secure Settings section, choose the SSL radio button -- this should automatically change the port next to the server name to 995
  4. Now click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option on the left.

  1. Highlight the SMTP server for Notre Dame. Then click the Edit button.

  2. In the SMTP Server dialog:
    1. Make sure that the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
    2. For the Port field, type in:  587 
    3. Place a check in the box for Use name and password
    4. For the User Name field, use your NetID
    5. Under the Use secure connection, select the radio button for TLS
  3. Click OK, then click OK again.

Now you can securely receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
