Security Setup on Existing Thunderbird v.1.5 for POP Email Client
NOTE: In order to ensure that Thunderbird email is setup for SSL and SMTP Authentication, you MUST follow these instructions EXACTLY!
- With Thunderbird open, go to the Tools menu, and select Account Settings.
- Next, select Server Settings from the subcategories
on the left under your Notre Dame account.

- Make sure that:
- your server name is set to pop.nd.edu
- Your user name is your NetID
- Under the Secure Settings section, choose the SSL radio button -- this should automatically change the port next to the server name to 995
- Now click on the Outgoing Server (SMTP) option on
the left.

- Highlight the SMTP server for Notre Dame. Then click the Edit button.
- In the SMTP Server dialog:
- Make sure that the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
- For the Port field, type in: 587
- Place a check in the box for Use name and password
- For the User Name field, use your NetID
- Under the Use secure connection, select the radio button for TLS
- Click OK, then click OK again.
Now you can securely receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
