Setup Thunderbird v. 1.0 for IMAP Email

  1. Go to the Tools menu and select Account Settings.
  2. Click the Add Account button.

  3. Choose the Email Account radio button. Click Next.

  4. Fill in your name as you would like it to appear (e.g., Anne Smith).
  5. Fill in your Notre Dame email address (e.g., asmith2@nd.edu). Then click Next.

  6. Choose the IMAP radio button.
  7. The Incoming Server name is: imap.nd.edu
  8. Click Next.

  9. The Incoming username is your NetID (e.g., asmith2).
  10. Click Next.

  11. Enter a name of your account (e.g., ND Email or asmith2@nd.edu).
  12. Click Next.

  13. Click Finish.

  14. Go to the Tools menu again and select Account Settings.
  15. Under the account you just created, click Server Settings.
  16. On the right side of the dialog, be sure that Use Secure Connection (SSL) is CHECKED.

  17. From the categories on the left, click Outgoing Server (SMTP).
  18. On the right side of the dialog, be sure that the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
  19. The Port should be set to: 587
  20. Be sure that Use name and password is CHECKED.
  21. The Username is your NetID (e.g., asmith2).
  22. Under Use Secure Connection, select the radio button for TLS.
  23. Click OK.

Now you can receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.

Setting Up the Notre Dame Directory

  1. Go to the Tools menu, and select Options.
  2. Under your Notre Dame account on the left, select Composition & Addressing.

  3. On the right side of the dialog, select the radio button for Use Different LDAP server.
  4. The click the Edit Directories button.
  5. Then click the Add.

  6. Fill in the following information:
    • Name: Notre Dame
    • Hostname: directory.nd.edu
    • Base DN: o="University of Notre Dame",st=Indiana,c=US

  7. Click OK. Click OK again. Then click OK one more time.

The ND Directory is now available for you to find email addresses.
