Setup Thunderbird v. 1.0 for POP Email
- Go to the Tools menu and select Account Settings.
- Click the Add Account button.
- Choose the Email Account radio button. Click Next.
- Fill in your name as you would like it to appear (e.g., Anne Smith).
- Fill in your Notre Dame email address (e.g., asmith2@nd.edu).
- Choose the POP radio button.
- The Incoming Server name is: pop.nd.edu
- Click Next.
- Incoming username is your NetID (e.g., asmith2). Click Next.
- Enter a name for your account (e.g., ND Email or asmith2@nd.edu). Click Next.
- Click Finish.
- Go to the Tools menu and select Account Settings.
- On the left side, under the account you just created, select Server Settings.
- On the right side of the dialog, be sure that Use Secure Connection (SSL) is CHECKED.
DO NOT CHECK THE BOX FOR "USE SECURE AUTHENTICATION."
- Now select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the list on the left.
- On the right side of the dialog, the Server Name is: smtp.nd.edu
- The Port is: 587
- Be sure that Use name and password is CHECKED.
- The Username is your NetID (e.g., asmith2).
- From under Use Secure Connection, select the TLS radio button. Click OK.
Now you can receive and send email through your Notre Dame email account from anywhere.
Setting Up the Notre Dame Directory
- Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
- Under your Notre Dame account on the left side, select Composition & Addressing.
- On the right side, select the radio button for Use Different LDAP server.
- Click the Edit Directories button.
- Then click the Add button.
- Fill in the following information:
- Name: Notre Dame
- Hostname: directory.nd.edu
- Base DN: o="University of Notre Dame",st=Indiana,c=US

- Click OK. Click OK again. Then click OK one more time.
The ND Directory is now available for you to find email addresses.
