Connecting a Blackberry Mobile Device to the University of Notre Dame’s Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES)
Note: The OIT strongly recommends that you configure your smartphone to require a passcode in order to access the phone if you use your smartphone to access or read any University information.
These instructions are for ND Faculty and Staff users that want to utilize the integration between their Blackberry Mobile Device and Notre Dame’s Exchange service. The BES allows for real-time email delivery, calendar updates, contact updates, and even allows a mobile user to search the Notre Dame directory directly from their Blackberry. Connecting a Blackberry device to ND’s BES also provides numerous security features to help secure user information.
- Ensure your Blackberry device has the appropriate service plan with your wireless carrier. (Some wireless providers require an “Enterprise” or “Corporate” Blackberry data plan before a user can connect to a BES.) If the Blackberry device is university-owned, you can contact the OIT’s Integrated Communication Services to request the necessary plan changes.
- After ensuring that you have the appropriate service plan for your Blackberry, contact the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111 to request access to Notre Dame’s Blackberry Enterprise Server. The following information will be required:
- Blackberry PIN (You can find this on your Blackberry by going to Options > Status.)
- University of Notre Dame Exchange Email Address (netid@nd.edu)
- NetID
- Once the Help Desk has processed the request for connection to the BES server, the NetID account requested in step 2 will receive an email with the activation password.
- On the Blackberry Device, select the Options menu to begin the activation process and enter the Options menu.

- In the Options menu, either select Enterprise Activation OR Advanced Options >Enterprise Activation.

- In the Enterprise Activation window, enter the Notre Dame email address the contains the user’s NetID (netid@nd.edu). Then enter the Activation password received in the Activation Email from the Notre Dame BES.

- After entering the netid@nd.edu and the activation password, display the pop-up menu to select Activate and begin the activation process.

- The activation process will begin automatically and will connect to Notre Dame’s BES. Please allow 15-30 minutess for the process to complete. The Blackberry Device will display an “Activation Complete” window once the process has completed.
