Network Questions

How do I get help?

  • Contact the Help Desk. During Freshman Orientation there will be people ready to provide phone or in room support. The schedule is available here: http://oit.nd.edu/start/resnet_fair.shtml
  • You can contact the Help Desk at 631-8111 or oithelp@nd.edu at any time during business hours.

How do I connect to the Internet?

  • Plug your Ethernet cable into your computer and then into the Ethernet jacks located by the phone jack in your room
  • Open or launch an Internet browser
  • If you’re not redirected automatically, go to http://ncr.nd.edu
  • Follow the instructions for registering your computer

Why do I have to register my computer or each network device?

  • The registration allows us to limit network access to those affiliated with Notre Dame.

I’m having problems connecting to the Internet, what do I do?

  • Try restarting or rebooting your computer
  • Try a different cable and/or jack
  • Make sure that the Ethernet cable is securely connected
  • For wireless connections, make sure the wireless card is enabled. (Look in your manual and see if there is button or key combination that turns on/off the wireless connection)
  • Have you registered your network device? Go to http://ncr.nd.edu and choose “Register Your Computer” and follow the instructions

I’m getting an error when I try to register, what do I do?

  • What error are you getting? Have this ready if you need to contact the Help Desk.
  • Is it saying that the name is not unique? Try going back and choosing a new host name. Selecting a name that contains your NetID will help insure that it is unique, i.e. netid-nomad.
  • Try restarting the computer and trying again

What is the Residence Hall Network (ResNet) and how fast is it?

  • ResNet is the short name for the residential network in all of the student dorms on campus. This fast Ethernet connection which is 300 times faster than a typical dial-up connection

What is Nomad and where is it available?

Where can I purchase an Ethernet cable?

You can purchase an Ethernet cable at the Solution Center (room 102 ITC, building #1061 on the campus map)

The jack in my room is not working, who do I contact?

  • Does your computer and cable work on another jack? If so, contact the Help Desk at 574-631-8111 and have the jack number ready

There are not enough jacks in my room, how can I get more?

  • There should be one jack per bed. A three room quad will have 4 jacks between the 3 rooms. If there are not enough jacks, you need to contact your Rector who will work with Residence Life and Housing to get additional jacks installed. The OIT can only install jacks in residence halls at the request of the Office of Residence Life and Housing.

What operating systems are supported on campus?

Can I set up my own Wireless Access Point, AirPort, or router?

  • These are not supported on campus and if set up incorrectly can break other users’ ability to connect to the Internet or they can interfere with other network hardware. The owner of any wireless access point, AirPort, or router is responsible for any unauthorized access to the Notre Dame network that is gained through an unsecure wireless access point, AirPort, or router.  The OIT reserves the right to take down any wireless access point or AirPort if it causes interferece with NOMAD Wireless or any other officially sanctioned Notre Dame service operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum.

What is a NetID and where can I get mine?

What is my e-mail address?

  • There are three valid e-mail addresses you can use:
    • netid@nd.edu
    • Firstname.MI.Lastname.#@nd.edu
    • Lastname.#@nd.edu
  • To find this information, do a search on your name in our online directory: http://www.nd.edu/directories/

My password recently expired and now I can't login. What can I do?

  • If your password expired during the past 30 days and you remember your old one, you can visit https://password.nd.edu to change your password.
  • If your password expired and you don't remember your old one, stop by the Help Desk (128 DeBartolo) with a photo ID and it can be reset

What's my NDID?

  • A unique number will have been automatically created for you, this number is on the back of your ID card. If you don't have your ID card contact the correct admissions office:
  • Undergraduates: 220 Main Building or 574-631-7505

    Master of Science in Administration(MSA): 574-631-7302

  • Try another computer or a different Internet browser
  • Have the error message ready and contact the Help Desk at 631-8111

Can I get my NetID changed?

  • Yes, under special circumstances. Please visit http://oit.nd.edu/passwords/netid_email_changes.shtml for additional details. Remember, there are three different e-mail addresses that you can use. To view them, visit http://eds.nd.edu and login to view your personal entry. The three valid forms are as follows:
    • NetID@nd.edu
    • Firstname.MI.Lastname.#@nd.edu
    • Lastname.#@nd.edu

  • There are multiple computer labs on campus that are available for anyone with a NetID. The computer labs give students access to additional software they don’t want to purchase and the Print@ND printers. For more information on what software and hardware is available in the clusters and where they are located, go here: http://oit.nd.edu/clusters_classrooms/index.shtml

What is Print@ND? Where are public printers?

  • Print@ND is the print service available to ND users. Each undergraduate student has a $100 free quota to use over the course of a year on any of the Print@ND print stations in the computer clusters.

How do I set up my voicemail?

What happened to the phones that were always in the residence hall rooms? Can I opt-in to get a phone in my room?

  • In-room phones are no longer a mandatory service for each room. You may opt-in for a phone in your room for a fee. Information on this is available at: http://oit.nd.edu/telecommunications

Purchase Information

I bought a computer from the Solution Center, where do I get it?

  • If the computer was not delivered to your home, you can pick it up at the ITC building (building #1061 on the campus map).

Where can I get an Ethernet cable?

  • You can purchase an Ethernet cable at the Solution Center.

Where can I buy software, such as Microsoft Office?

  • You can purchase many software titles at the Solution Center at educational discounted prices.
