Preparing to Graduate From ND
As you are preparing to graduate from Notre Dame, you'll want to follow these simple steps to make sure you have what you need from your Notre Dame account prior to leaving campus this spring. Remember, your ND account will only remain active for 60 days after you leave!
- Set up Email Forwarding through the Alumni Association: You will want to set up an email forwarding account through the Alumni Association by registering for Irish Online. This email forwarding account is available to students as well as alumni and never needs to change, but gives you the flexibility to set your destination email address as your primary email account now and change it as often as you need to when you graduate, switch jobs or use new service providers. You get to choose your own address which uses the form sample@alumni.nd.edu. Click here to register.
- Forward Your ND Email & Let Others Know Your New Address: You'll want to setup a new email account (e.g., Gmail Hotmail or Yahoo!Mail)
and forward your Notre Dame email to that account. You'll also want
to setup an auto-reply on your Notre Dame account to let people know
that your address has changed. To forward your Notre Dame email and
setup an auto-reply:
- Login to the Enterprise Directory Service (EDS) with your NetID and password.
- From the display of your personal entry in EDS, select the Email Options button.
- Click the link for Set Forwarding.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. DO NOT choose to "save a copy of received messages in your ND mailbox."
- Scroll back to the top of the page and click the link for Set Auto-Reply.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Be sure to scroll to the top and click the Save Changes button to activate the forward and the auto-reply.
- Download and Archive Your ND Email: If you used Webmail as your mail client or if you setup a desktop client using the IMAP protocol, you'll want to be sure to download or save any messages you want for the future on your local hard drive.
- Download and Archive Your AFS & NetFile Files: Next, you'll want to be sure to download any files in your AFS space or NetFile space that you may want to have for the future. The most convenient way to access your NetFile and AFS space is using WebFile. All OIT owned computer clusters have CD burning hardware and software for your use, or you can purchase a USB flash drive from the Computer Store in room 103 ITC.
- Keep Your Computer Secure! Remember after you leave to keep your operating system and anti-virus software updated!
- Graduation Videos: Graduation Videos are handled by the Academic Media Resources group in OIT. All information regarding Commencement Videos can be found HERE.
- Remove Notre Dame licensed software from your computer: While you're a student at Notre Dame, a variety of licensed software is made available to you for academic use. Now that you are leaving Notre Dame, you need to remove such software from your own computer. Since these programs are licensed only for use by members of the Notre Dame community, you will no longer be eligible to have these programs installed on your computer after you graduate. Some of these programs would include:
- Graphical Analysis
- McAfee Virus Scan
- Norton Anti-Virus for Macintosh
- S-Plus
- SAS
- SPSS
- SYSTAT
- X-Win32
You DO NOT need to un-install any software which was pre-installed on your computer or which you purchased through the Notre Dame Computer Store.
- Need a New Computer to Take With You? Take advantage of your student discount one last time to purchase a new computer through the Computer Store.
