ND Home Page FAQ
On August 28, 2007, the Office of Public Affairs and Communication unveiled the new ND home page at http://www.nd.edu, which requires Flash Player to be installed in order to view content. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers which have been compiled by the Office of Information Technologies since the new site went live.
Problems installing Flash Player
- Need to install Flash Player to access the new ND home page, but don’t have access rights to do so.
- Login as administrator, use your browser to visit http://www.nd.edu and follow the instructions for installing Flash Player.
- If you don’t have a login with administrative rights, contact your Departmental IT support for assistance.
Problems with Safari on Macintosh
- Using a Macintosh with OS 10.3.9 (or lower). When accessing the ND Home Page using Safari (any version prior to 2.x) the browser quits.
- This problem was resolved by a change to the site on 8/31/07 for currently supported versions of the Macintosh OS (10.3+).
- Use another browser, such as Firefox.
Problems with MS Office and Contribute
- Since installing Flash Player to access the new ND home page, when attempting to launch a MS Office application (Word, Excel, etc.) a prompt is received that Contribute needs to install files.
- Removing FlashPaper resolves this problem – contact Departmental IT support or the OIT Help Desk for a utility that will assist with this.
- When prompted to install files, click Cancel several times to load the application. This will be required each time you launch the MS Office application until the problem is corrected.
Dial-Up Connections
- Using a dial-up Internet connection, when accessing the ND Home Page it is extremely slow to load, or doesn’t load at all.
- Avoid accessing www.nd.edu and enter the URL for the specific departmental or individual page you want to access (e.g. http://oit.nd.edu, http://alumni.nd.edu, etc.)
- On 9/17/07 an alternate page without the video content was activated at http://www.nd.edu/alt/ which may work better for slower network connections, but still provide the same links to information and services.
Browsers that Work
