Recommended Security Options

What is the ND Security Standard for Vista and how do I configure it?

You can view the Security Standard that the OIT has established for Vista at ND at https://secure.nd.edu/standards/index.shtml. All University-owned computers with the Vista operating system should be configured to this standard. You can either deploy the settings yourself, or join the computer to the domain to have them automatically applied for you. Contact your departmental IT staff or the OIT Help Desk for assistance.

How do I encrypt sensitive data on a machine with Vista?

The OIT recommends using Bitlocker for encryption. All computers containing sensitive data, particularly laptops that are more vulnerable to theft, should be encrypted. Bitlocker is included with the Enterprise and Ultimate versions of Vista, and can be configured on all machines if desired. To have your University-owned computer encrypted, please contact your departmental IT staff or submit the form at http://secure.nd.edu/encryption or request that new computers ordered through CWP (Campus Workstation Program) be encrypted when installed/delivered. We recommend that encryption of computers be done by qualified IT professionals. Guidelines and links to documentation for the process are available here.
