Dial-Up Instructions for Mac OS 8.6 - 9.x
The Notre Dame modem pool has only 282 modems to provide all faculty, staff, and students with free off-campus access, and the University currently has no plan to expand the modem pool. Many users find that due to the frequent busy signals, and slow access through a modem pool, it is well worth the small monthly fee for cable broadband or DSL service.
- Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Go to Control Panels.
- Choose Remote Access.
- In the Name field, type your NetID (e.g., asmith).
- In the Number field, type 6314792.
- Close the Remote Access Control Panel and save the changes as prompted.
- Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Go to Control Panels.
- Choose TCP/IP.
- From the Connect Via drop-down menu, select PPP.
- The Configure Using field should now read Using PPP Server.
- In the Name Server Addr. field type: 129.74.250.100
- In the Search Domains field type: nd.edu
- Close TCP/IP and save the changes when prompted.
- Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
- Select Chooser.
- Make sure that AppleTalk is inactive and close the Chooser.
- You can now connect to Notre Dame by re-opening the Remote Access control panel (see steps 1-3), entering your password and clicking on the Connect button.
