Dial-Up Instructions for Mac OS X

The Notre Dame modem pool has only 282 modems to provide all faculty, staff, and students with free off-campus access, and the University currently has no plan to expand the modem pool. Many users find that due to the frequent busy signals, and slow access through a modem pool, it is well worth the small monthly fee for cable broadband or DSL service.

  1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
  2. Select System Preferences....
  3. Choose the Network icon.
  4. Next to the Show field, select Internal Modem.

If Internal Modem is not an option in this list, select the Network Port Configurations, and check Internal Modem. If Internal Modem is not a choice in this list either, then you do not have a modem installed in your computer, or it is not working correctly.
  5. With Internal Modem selected, you should see four tabs: TCP/IP, PPP, Proxies, and Modem. Select PPP.
  6. In the Telephone Number field, type 6314792.
  7. In the Account Name field, type your NetID (e.g., asmith).
  8. In the Password field, type your password.
  9. Now click on the TCP/IP tab.
  10. Verify that the Configure field is set to Using PPP.
  11. In the Domain Name Servers field, type: 129.74.250.100
  12. In the Search Domains field, type: nd.edu
  13. Now click on the Modem tab. Check Show modem status in menu bar. This will place an icon for the modem in the upper right area of your menubar, near the clock. You can connect to Notre Dame from here.
  14. Click Apply Now to make these settings active and Quit the System Preferences.
  15. You can now connect to Notre Dame by clicking on the phone icon in your menubar in the upper right-hand area, near the date and time, and selecting Connect... from this menu.

If you need additional software, you can purchase a CD of selected software from the OIT Solutions Center, 112 Information Technology Center, or you can download software from the OIT Software site.
