Dial-Up Instructions for Windows 2000

The Notre Dame modem pool has only 282 modems to provide all faculty, staff, and students with free off-campus access, and the University currently has no plan to expand the modem pool. Many users find that due to the frequent busy signals, and slow access through a modem pool, it is well worth the small monthly fee for cable broadband or DSL service.

  1. Double-click on My Computer.
  2. Double-click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Network and Dial-Up Connections.
  4. Double-click on Make New Connection.
  5. You will be welcomed to the Dial Up Connection Wizard. Click Next.
  6. Select the radio button for Dial-Up to the Internet. Click Next.
  7. In the welcome screen of the Internet Connection Wizard, select the radio button for I want to set up my internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network. Click Next.
  8. If it is not already selected, select the radio button for I want to connect through a phone line and modem. Click Next.
  9. The Choose Modem dialog box will appear. If you have a modem correctly installed, it should already be showing in the selection window. Click Next.
  10. In Step 1 (Internet Account Connection Information), in the Area Code field type 574 and in the Telephone Number field type 6314792. Uncheck Use Area Code and Dialing Properties. Click Next.
  11. In Step 2 (Internet Account Login Information), type your User Name (NetID, e.g., asmith) and your Password. Click Next.
  12. In Step 3 (Configuring Your Computer), by default the connection will be called “Connection to 6314792”. You can either change the connection name to anything you wish or leave the default (this is just an identification label for the dialer). We suggest Dial Notre Dame. Click Next.
  13. When asked to set up your Internet mail account, select No and click Next. You will then see a wizard window offering to connect you to the Internet immediately. If you are ready to start navigating the web, leave it checked and click on Finished. If you are not, simply uncheck the box and click Next.
  14. Navigate back to the newly created connection named Dial Notre Dame in the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder, do a single right-click on it and select Create Shortcut. A window will pop upinforming you that you cannot create the shortcut in that window, and will ask you if you want to place it on your desktop. Click Yes. This will now create a shortcut for dial-up on your desktop. To launch it, simply double-click on the newly created icon.

If you need additional software, you can purchase a CD of selected software from the OIT Solutions Center, 112 Information Technology Center, or you can download software from the OIT Software site.
