Dial-Up Instructions for Windows XP

The Notre Dame modem pool has only 282 modems to provide all faculty, staff, and students with free off-campus access, and the University currently has no plan to expand the modem pool. Many users find that due to the frequent busy signals, and slow access through a modem pool, it is well worth the small monthly fee for cable broadband or DSL service.

  1. Go to the Start menu and select Control Panels.
  2. Go to Network and Internet Connections. Click on Network Connections.
  3. Click Create a New Connection. Click Next.
  4. Select Connect to Internet and click Next.
  5. Choose Setup My Connection Manually and click Next.
  6. Choose Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
  7. For the name of the connection, enter Notre Dame. Click Next.
  8. For the phone number, enter 631-4792. Click Next.
  9. In the Username field, enter your NetID (e.g., asmith). In the Password field, you may choose to enter your password. Check Turn on the Internet connection firewall. Click Next.
  10. Select Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop and press Finish. Double-click the icon on that desktop that you just added. The computer will dial into our modem pool. If the ID and password are correct, you will have an Internet connection and may now launch your browser or email client.

If you need additional software, you can purchase a CD of selected software from the OIT Solutions Center, 112 Information Technology Center, or you can download software from the OIT Software site.
