General rules/policies for wireless communications at Notre Dame

  • To avoid potential interference with Notre Dame's wireless network, users are not allowed to install their own wireless access point on campus.
  • The owner of any wireless access point, AirPort, or router is responsible for any unauthorized access to the Notre Dame network that is gained through an unsecure wireless access point, AirPort, or router.  The OIT reserves the right to take down any wireless access point or AirPort if it causes interference with NOMAD Wireless or any other officially sanctioned Notre Dame service operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
  • Wireless services are subject to the same rules and policies that govern other communications services at Notre Dame.
  • Radio interference: Because of a dependence on a scarce-shared resource, radio communication is subject to additional rules concerning interference and shared use.
  • Network policies: To successfully deploy an 802.11b network, it is required that all equipment operating in the 2.4 GHz spectrum be carefully installed and configured. This is to avoid any physical and logical interference between components of different network segments.
  • Installation: To minimize interference at Notre Dame, the wireless policy requires that any installation of 802.11b wireless networking equipment in or near general or common-use areas be coordinated through the Office of Information Technologies.

Additional detail on wireless policy is available here.
