Disabling Wireless in Windows XP Professional
Disable Wireless
Enable Wireless
Most Windows computers will automatically use wireless if it's available, even if you also have a wired connection plugged in. When using your wired connection, it's best to disable wireless for optimal performance. Follow these instructions to Disable or Enable your wireless connection.
Disable
- Click Start and go to Control Panel
(Note: if your Control Panel doesn’t look like this, click Switch to Classic View on the left side)
- Double click on Network Connections
- Right Click on Wireless Network Connection and choose Disable
- If you've not used your wired connection before, you will need to launch a browser and register this connection the first time you use it. Your browser should automatically re-direct to the OIT’s Network Connection Registration Page. If this does not happen, go to: http://ncr.nd.edu (additional instructions can be found here).
Enable
When you want to switch to wireless, repeat the process by:
- Clicking Start and going to Control Panel
- Double click on Network Connections
- Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and
- Choose Enable
If you have any problems or questions, call the OIT Help Desk at 631-8111.
