Connecting to ND-Secure Wireless on Windows XP (Service Pack 2 or 3)

 

  1. Right-Click on the Wireless network icon in your system tray and select View Available Wireless Networks.

  2. Click on the Change advanced settings link on the left side of the Wireless Network Connection window.

  3. The Wireless Network Connection Properties window will be displayed. Click on the Wireless Networks tab and then click the Add… button in the preferred networks section.

  4. Fill in the following information:
    • Network name (SSID): ND-secure (this is case-sensitive so make sure to capitalize the ND
    • Check: Connect even if this network is not broadcasting
    • Network Authentication: WPA2 (or WPA)
    • Data Encryption: AES

  5. Click on the Authentication tab and for the EAP Type select Protected EAP (PEAP). UNcheck “Authenticate as computer when computer information is available.” Click on Properties to continue.

    Note: If your computer is on the Windows (ADND) domain, you will want to leave "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available" CHECKED.

  6. In the Protected EAP Properties Window choose the following settings:
    • Check Validate server certificate
    • In the Trusted Root Certification Authorities window, scroll to “Equifax Secure Certificate Authority” and select the check box
    • Select Authentication Method: Secure password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
    • Click on the “Configure…” button to continue

  7. The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties window will appear and if the computer is NOT a member of the ADND Windows Domain, UNcheck the box for “Automatically use my Windows logon name and password” and click OK to continue and click OK again to return to the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.

    If the computer IS a member of the ADND Domain, leave the box CHECKED.

  8. Ensure that ND-secure is now listed in the Preferred Networks window and that it is located at the top of the list. If it is not at the top of the list, select ND-secure and click Move up until it is listed at the top. Then click OK to close and continue.

  9. Once the computer connects to ND-secure, it will present a pop-up balloon asking for you to select a certificate or other credentials to connect. Click on the balloon to enter your Notre Dame credentials.

  10. After clicking on the pop-up, windows will display the “Enter Credentials” window. Enter your Notre Dame NetID (e.g., asmith) and password. Leave the “Logon domain:” field blank. Click OK to continue. Windows will now attempt to connect the computer to ND-secure using the credentials provided.

  11. When the computer has successfully connected to the ND-secure wireless network, it will present a pop-up balloon indicating the network it has connected to and the current signal strength.
