Changes to Email That May Affect Many Users
Making Email at Notre Dame More Secure
Published: 7/19/2004
In an effort to increase the security of your password and to add security to the central Notre Dame email system, some changes to email access will be put into effect on Monday, September 20, 2004. Users of desktop email clients, such as Eudora, Netscape, Mac OS X Mail, or Outlook, will need to adjust the configuration of those clients to use SMTP Authentication and SSL. SMTP Authentication ensures that only Notre Dame users are able to send email through the Notre Dame system by requiring users to provide their NetID and password when sending messages. SSL is a protocol that encrypts your password when logging into the central Notre Dame email system.
Instructions on how to configure OIT-supported desktop email clients to use SMTP Authentication and SSL are available on the web at: http://oit.nd.edu/email/setup.shtml
Note: Users of Webmail will be unaffected by this change.
Please be sure to pay attention to any special instructions you receive from local IT support staff regarding this change.
If you have additional questions or need assistance, please contact your departmental IT support staff or the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111.
