IT Services: What's New for Back-to-School
8/17/2004
Upgrades continue
From a newly renovated data center to optical-fiber linking
the University to one of the major global Internet and Internet2 interconnects
in Chicago, Notre Dame continues to upgrade its IT infrastructure.
Just recently, OIT network engineers in cooperation with the College of Engineering performed a major redo of the networks that support engineering research facilities in Cushing and Fitzpatrick Halls. And in the months to come, Notre Dame will continue to expand wireless access across campus, and make wireless connectivity possible from designated green spaces.
Tool helps students take charge of computer security
The University continues to emphasize individual computer users
are largely responsible their own computer security. Toward that end,
the OIT has created a new Take Charge Tool available for download from
http://oit.nd.edu/takecharge to help Microsoft
Windows users secure their computers against viruses, malicious programs
and other security threats.
New students will use the Take Charge Tool when they register their computers on the Notre Dame network.
Antivirus software available for download
McAfee antivirus software for Microsoft Windows is available free of charge
to all Notre Dame students, faculty and staff, as is the latest version
of Norton Antivirus for those who use a Macintosh computer. Download either
from http://oit.nd.edu/software .
Mandatory security sessions for new students
Special mandatory security sessions for new students are scheduled
throughout the day on August 23 and 24. Check the back-to-school IT
events schedule for details.
Email to become more secure
Email will
become more secure in the coming weeks, and other security enhancements
are on their way. Get ready by using complex passwords. Choose a password
made up of at least eight random letters, numbers and symbols, and change
it frequently. If you're concerned about forgetting your password, use
the ND Remember Password service at https://password.nd.edu.
Wireless access available across campus
Nomad, the wireless service that enables Notre Dame users with
wireless-capable laptops and handheld devices to connect to the Notre
Dame network through the air, continues to expand. Go to http://oit.nd.edu/nomad
for a listing and a map of where Nomad is available.
Renovare implementation begins
As a part of Renovare, the program to replace Notre Dame's finance
system (http://renovare.nd.edu/finance
) is now up and running. The University portal insideND (http://inside.nd.edu
), another Renovare initiative, is available to faculty and staff,
as well.
Changes in shared storage
Students and faculty new to Notre Dame will want to familiarize
themselves with the University's Institutional File Space services, AFS
and NetFile. Also, returning students and faculty who use AFS, may want
to check out the changes affecting
how users access this service.
Clusters and classrooms
Please refer to http://oit.nd.edu/clusters_classrooms
for information on locations of computer clusters, hours of cluster
operations, use of WebCT, laptop checkout program, printing quotas and
other pertinent IT teaching and learning services.
