Demonstrations to Show Technologies that Aid Teaching, Research
01/20/2005 (reprinted from 1/18/2005 issue of ND Works)
A new professional development opportunity is being launched this semester
to help faculty learn about technologies that enhance teaching, learning,
research and scholarship.
"Applications of Academic Technologies" will feature presentations by faculty who have used tools such as Endnote, video conferencing, the WebCt course management system and online survey tools in research.
Brochures describing the presentations were distributed to mailboxes early this month. Information also is available on the Web at http://oit.nd.edu/training/aat.shtml.
The program grew out of the Office of Information Technologies' pledge, in its strategic plan, to support the faculty teaching and research process. It surveyed faculty on their interests, then identified specialists who could provide that information.
The program is an effort by OIT, University Libraries, Graduate School , Computer Applications Program (CAPP) and the Kaneb Center for Teaching and Learning. It is sponsored by the University Academic Technical Training Committee (UATTC), chaired by Shiree Moreland of OIT and Joni Warner of the University Libraries.
The following presentations will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Notre Dame Room of LaFortune Student Center:
Working with Endnote: How to Save Time and Stay Organized in Your Research; Wednesday, Jan. 26 with Michael Brownstein, associate professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures.
Video Conferencing: What are the issues?; Tuesday, Feb. 8 with Jesus Izaguirre, assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and Jeffrey Miller, manager, Academic Media Resources, OIT.
Working with WebCT Vista: A Look at ND's New Course Management System; Thursday, March 3, with Tom Laughner, associate director for Educational Technologies and Services and adjunct instructor in sociology.
Research Surveys: Using Online Survey Tools in Research; Thursday, April 21, with Mark Gunty, assistant professor of sociology and assistant director of Institutional Research, and Tatiana Tkachenko, Institutional Research analyst.
