Network Questions

Q: How do I get help?

A: Help from Residental Computing Support

  • Contact the Residental Computing Associates (RCAs).  During Freshman Orientation there will be people available to come to residence halls for assistance.  The schedule is available at   http://oit.nd.edu/start/resnet_fair.shtml
  • Or you can contact the OIT Help Desk at 1-8111.

Q: How do I connect to the Internet?

A: Here's how:

  • Plug your Ethernet cable into your computer and then into the Ethernet jacks located by the phone jack in your room.
  • Open or launch an Internet browser.
  • If you’re not automatically redirected, go to:  http://ncr.nd.edu
  • Follow the instructions for registering your computer.

Q: Why do I have to register my computer or each network device?

A: The registration allows us to limit network access to those affiliated with Notre Dame.

Q: I’m having problems connecting to the Internet, what do I do?

A: Try these steps:

  • Try restarting or rebooting your computer.
  • Try a different cable and/or jack.
  • Make sure that the Ethernet cable is securely connected.
  • For wireless connections, make sure the wireless card is enabled.  (Look in your manual and see if there is a button or key combination that turns on/off the wireless connection.)
  • Have you registered your network device on line at:  http://ncr.nd.edu?
  • Contact the RCAs at 1-7610.  During Freshman Orientation there will be people available to come to the dorms for assistance.  The schedule is available at http://oit.nd.edu/start/resnet_fair.shtml
  • Or you can contact the OIT Help Desk at 1-8111.

Q: I’m getting an error when I try to register, what do I do?

A: Try these steps:

  • What error are you getting?  Have this information ready if you need to contact the RCAs or the OIT Help Desk.
  • Is it saying that the "name is not unique?"  Try going back and choosing a new host name.  Something with your NetID will help ensure that it is unique (e.g., netid-nomad).

Q: What is ResNet and how fast is it?

A: ResNet is the name for the residential network in all the student dorms on campus.  This fast Ethernet connection is 300 times faster than a dial-up connection.

Q: What is NOMAD and where is it available?

A: NOMAD is the wireless network available in different public spaces on campus.  Currently it is not available in the residence halls, but it is available in the Library, LaFortune, DeBartolo, etc.  For more information, visit http://oit.nd.edu/nomad.

Q: Where can I purchase an Ethernet cable?

A: You can purchase an Ethernet cable at the ND Computer Store (Solutions Center) in room 112 ITC, building #1061.

Q: The jack in my room is not working, who do I contact?

A: Does your computer and cable work on another jack?  If so, contact the OIT Help Desk at 1-8111 and have the jack number ready.

Q: There are not enough jacks in my room, how can I get more?

A: There should be one jack per bed.  A three room quad will have 4 jacks among the three rooms.  If there are not enough jacks, you need to contact your Rector who will work with Residence Life and Housing to get additional jacks installed.  The OIT can ONLY install jacks in residence halls at the request of Residence Life and Housing.

Q: Can I setup my own wireless access point, AirPort, or router?

A: These are not supported on the campus network, and if they are setup incorrectly can break network access for other users.

Email Questions

Q: How do I get email?

A: There are two ways:

Q: Why do I keep getting all these messages with a subject line starting with [SPAM]?

A: The OIT has installed a new spam tagging service that adds [SPAM] at the beginning of the subject line for a message that is suspected of being spam (or unwanted, unsolicited email).  You can setup a filter in most email clients to move these messages to another folder to help you deal with spam messages.

Purchase Information

Q: Where can I buy a computer?  An Ethernet cable?  Software, such as Microsoft Office?

A: Visit the ND Computer Store (Solutions Center), room 112 ITC. It's in the IT Center Building, Building 1061, on the campus map.

Cluster Computing & Campus Printing

Q: Are there any public access computers or clusters?

A: There are multiple computer clusters on campus that are available to anyone with a NetID.  The computer clusters give students access to additional software they don’t want to purchase, as well as to campus printing.  For more information on what software and hardware is available in the clusters and where they are located, visit  http://oit.nd.edu/clusters_classrooms.

Q: What printing options do I have on campus?

A: Printers are available for students to use in the campus computer clusters and in select residence halls. Additional information is available at  http://oit.nd.edu/print_scan_copy.
