Notre Dame Computer Users Required to Change Passwords at Least Once Every 180 Days 9/15/2005
Beginning September 24, 2005, The Notre Dame Office of Information Technologies (OIT) will begin notifying members of the Notre Dame community who have a password that has not changed since July 2005 to change their existing network password.
The notifications will take place over time; not all members of the Notre Dame community will be notified on the same day or during the same week. New passwords, once set, are valid for 180 days, and then must be changed again.
When you receive a message to change your existing password, follow the instructions in the email message and do so at your earliest convenience.
University computer users will have 30 days from the receipt of the first notification to change their NetID password. If you do not establish a new password in this time frame, your current password will expire. This will disrupt your access to network services, including shared storage and email, until the password is changed. The initial notification will be followed by several reminders throughout the 30-day grace period.
You do not have to wait for notification to change your password. Open your Web browser, type in password.nd.edu, and press Return.
Those who have changed their password within the past 180 days and who thereafter change passwords before another 180 days passes will not receive change notifications.
The Strong Password program is a campus-wide computer security initiative based on a policy ( http://oit.nd.edu/policies/strongpassword.shtml ) approved by University leaders earlier this year.
