Strong Passwords

University computer users who change their passwords or create a password for the first time are required to create “Strong Passwords.” Instructions for creating a Strong Password are available on the password change page at https://accounts.nd.edu/password.

TakeCharge v.2

The TakeCharge program configures your computer to receive the latest operating system and security updates; ensures your firewall is activated (Windows XP users); installs a set of tools to assist IT support staff in troubleshooting problems on your computer; and also gives you the option to install a set of anti-spyware tools licensed for Notre Dame users.  For more information visit:

Setting Up Email Applications: Email SSL and SMTP Authentication Requirements

To increase the security of your password and to add security to the central Notre Dame email system, users need to configure their email clients for SSL and SMTP Auth.  Detailed instructions for supported clients can be viewed at http://oit.nd.edu/email/setup_sslandsmtp.shtml

Printers are now available in the following residence halls:

VPN (Virtual Private Network)

The VPN gateway is a network access service (for Faculty and Staff only) that permits remote systems to access the ND network as if they were physically located on the ND campus network. In technical terms, it allows remote systems to obtain a campus IP address, for purposes of access to certain restricted on-campus systems. WebCT Vista

WebCT Vista is course management software that enables instructors to create and manage web-based learning materials and activities. Students use WebCT Vista to access these materials and participate in learning activities via the web.  For more information, visit  http://vista.nd.edu/index.html

WebFile  v.2

WebFile is a utility that allows you to access your Institutional File Space (IFS) using a web browser.  IFS at Notre Dame includes such spaces as NetFile, AFS, H: and I: drives, Courseware, NDAccess, etc.  WebFile allows you to access any of these spaces from anywhere in the world, on either PC or Mac, as long as you have a current web browser.  Secure FTP (SFTP) to IFS is also available for easy uploading and downloading.  It is secure, versatile and most of all, it is EASY! Online Computer Help

On August 1, 2005 the OIT began using Axios Assyst for incident tracking.  Assyst provides the University users with the ability to search our knowledge base to answer questions they have, to submit their questions to us electronically and to track submitted incidents.  To access Assyst, visit  https://assyst.nd.edu

Residential Hall Computer Assistant Help

On-site support for those living in the Residence Halls is available for network assistance. To schedule an appointment, call 574-631-7610.
