Lenovo/IBM ThinkPad Battery Recall & Replacement
Lenovo announced on September 28, 2006 that it was recalling some of the Sony batteries used in its ThinkPad laptop computers. If you use a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad, follow the instructions on http://www.Lenovo.com/batteryprogram to determine if you need to request a new battery for your Lenovo laptop. If yours is part of the recall, you can now order your replacement battery directly from Lenovo via this site. Lenovo recommends that users whose ThinkPad batteries are subject to recall remove the battery and use a power cord in the interim.
Lenovo Expedited ND Replacements
From the beginning of the recall, Lenovo, because of it’s strong relationship with the University, elected to work with the OIT to facilitate battery recalls. As a result, they helped identify about 35 affected systems that had been deployed to faculty, staff and students, and provided priority status to provide these replacements. All identified system owners have now been contacted and that replacement process is complete. Any additional replacements not previously identified should now contact Lenovo directly by visiting http://www.Lenovo.com/batteryprogram.
If you need additional assistance in this effort, contact your departmental IT staff or the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111 should you have questions.
Owners of other brands of laptops, such as Dell, Apple and Toshiba, that have initiated similar recalls, should check the manufacturer’s website for information.
Battery Recalls of Other Laptop Brands
In recent weeks several other laptop manufacturer's have announced similar recalls of Sony batteries. These manufacturers are working directly with computer owners on battery recalls--not through the OIT. Please check their websites for additional information. Some of those sites include:
