Never Means Never!
Over the weekend several varieties of phishing scam messages were delivered to many ND e-mail addresses. You may have received such a message, asking you to reply with your NetID and password.
You should NEVER provide ANYONE with your password, Social Security Number, credit card number or other sensitive information by e-mail, as e-mail messages travel over the Internet in an insecure manner. You should think of an e-mail message as equivalent to a postcard. Notre Dame will NEVER request this information from you via e-mail.
If you received this e-mail, or a similar one, it is imperative that you do not reply with any sensitive information. If you think a request for your personal information might be legitimate, contact the department or institution, using its officially published phone number (either found in the phone book or by searching for its website online). Never use the contact information found in an e-mail that asks for sensitive information, or click on any links found in the message.
We've posted some recent examples of the messages being received at oit.nd.edu/email/phishingexamples.shtml and some suggestions for dealing with spam at oit.nd.edu/email/spam.shtml.
If you have additional questions, please contact your departmental IT support or the OIT Help Desk (574-631-8111).
