Caution: The FBI warns that e-cards could contain a virus
Posted 2/13/08 4:30PM:
If you receive a Valentine’s Day e-card, be careful. It may not be from a secret admirer, but instead might contain a virus. Be wary of any e-mail received from an unknown sender. Do not open any unsolicited e-mail and do not click on any links provided.
E-mails that might be a threat will direct you to click on a link to retrieve an electronic greeting card (e-card). Clicking on the link automatically infects your computer (or other network connected device) with the Storm Worm virus, which enables malicious individuals to user your computer to facilitate criminal activity such as spam e-mail, identity theft, denial of service attacks, and spreading malware to other machines on the Internet. (For additional information on this warning, visit www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel08/stormworm021208.htm).
If you receive an e-card from someone you don’t know, it’s best to just delete the message without visiting the link. If you have additional questions, please contact your departmental IT support or the OIT Help Desk (631-8111).
