Campus Internet & Network Outage 8/19/2005
The network and Internet disruption on Friday, August 19 was caused by a
single campus computer. That Windows 2000 computer had no firewall
installed to defend it, and even though its anti-virus software was
completely up to date, it was still exposed enough to become a tool for
an attacker. This compromised computer has been removed from service,
and is being analyzed by OIT Information Security.
Your computer, with a 100 Mb network connection to the Notre Dame
network, is also capable of causing this problem again. To prevent your
Windows computer from being the cause of the next campus network outage,
protect your computer now by following the instructions online at:
http://oit.nd.edu/protect_windows
It is imperative that all computers are properly secured and updated
regularly -- especially departmental or lab computers that may not be
used on a daily basis.
