Urgent OIT Security Alert: ResNet Virus Outbreak

OIT staff have identified and blocked two computers infected with a virus that causes network disruption. At this time, no further virus activity has been detected. If you experience further symptoms of the network disruption (visiting web pages redirects to unrelated sites or displays garbage characters), please contact Operations at 631-5603.

OIT staff were notified by a student that when accessing web sites they received a screen of garbage characters (e.g.
ZÝrÛ¸ ¾N¿ «í¬íMDJvìĶä Çv 'þ KÙÌn§ãHHBL Jq¶}). This is a symptom of the virus activity seen earlier in the week and the network disruption it causes. Networking staff are currently scanning for the infected computers causing the problem and will block their network access immediately.
If you do not have current antivirus software installed, you should immediately do so by visiting the secure.nd.edu website and clicking the "Free Antivirus and Antispyware Software" link.

The virus outbreak that was detected on Tuesday is believed to have been contained. No additional machines have been detected exhibiting the network disruption in the past 24 hours. The virus affected 10 computers owned by students, and their owners have been contacted with instructions to immediately change their password from a computer that has not been affected, and their computers are currently in the Service Department for analysis and cleaning.

During the course of the day, ResNet operation has been impacted by a virus that interferes with network operations. OIT engineers have identified and disconnected several computers on ResNet that were infected and were disrupting network use for other users.
We strongly encourage you to immediately check your computer to ensure that you have active, current antivirus software installed. If you do not have antivirus software or do not have a current antivirus subscription, you should download and install McAfee VirusScan from the OIT website immediately. As a Notre Dame student, OIT makes this software available to you without charge. You may download and install the software using the free TakeCharge installer, available by clicking the "Free Antivirus and Antispyware Software" link on the secure.nd.edu website.
