ND Security Alert: .zip and .rar email attachments automatically quarantined to protect you

Posted 8/14/08 2:25PM:
Due to another wave of e-mails with virus-carrying .zip and .rar attachments, the OIT has once again begun quarantining e-mail messages containing those attachments. The most recent example indicated a transfer of funds from your checking account.  These harmful messages are changing more quickly than anti-virus vendors can adapt their products to detect, causing the potential for damage to computers when recipients open them. You should always verify the legitimacy of any unexpected e-mail attachments by asking the sender before opening it.

If you are expecting a .zip attachment from someone, and you have confirmed with them that it is legitimate, visit myspam.nd.edu to find the attachment in your quarantined e-mail. Then release the desired message for delivery to your inbox.  As always, use caution when opening any e-mail attachment - even from people you know. Many people send normal office documents (files ending in .doc,.docx,.xls,.xlsx etc.) or pictures (.jpg or .bmp) as attachments in an e-mail. .Zip files are most often used when someone sends you multiple files at once or to save space when sending large files.

The temporary quarantine of email with .zip and .rar attachments will continue through Back to School or until anti-virus software vendors can adapt to these threats.  Note:  Even if you previously configured your e-mail to opt-out of the spam quarantine, the mail service will still quarantine messages with .zip attachments.
