Responsible Use of Information Technologies at Notre Dame

This document constitutes the University policy for the management of computer networks, personal computers and the resources made available thereby. The policy reflects the ethical principles of the University community and indicates, in general, the privileges and responsibilities of those using University computing resources. Because some networks operate in environments in which specific items in this policy do not apply, system administrators are permitted, with prior approval of the Chief Information Officer, to create written policies that are at variance with this one, as long as the principles related to legal use and institutional purposes stated herein are preserved. In such cases, it is the responsibility of system administrators to make relevant variances known to their users.

The purpose of this policy is to protect Notre Dame’s information resources from accidental or intentional unauthorized access or damage, while also preserving the open information sharing requirements of its academic culture. This policy lays the foundation for a common understanding of information security at Notre Dame based upon the generally accepted information security principles of confidentiality, integrity and availability.

NetID Access to Information Technology Resources
Note: The University is currently operating under this policy, which was approved by the Data Oversight Committee. The policy is awaiting ratification by the Officers.

This policy is a component of a larger overall strategy for Identity Management, a program to deal with identifying individuals affiliated with the University in various ways, and controlling their access to University resources and services by associating individual rights and restrictions with their established identity.
