Information Technology Standards
The University Information Security Policy requires controls to manage risks to the confidentiality, integrity and availability of University information. These handling standards define the controls required for University information in any form, and represent a minimum standard for protection of University information.
Security Configuration
(Requires NetID & Password)
The University, through the Office of the CIO, has adopted security configuration standards for network connected devices. These standards were developed by the Office of Information Technologies in cooperation with IT professionals from academic and business units throughout the University.
As described by the Responsible Use of Information Technologies at Notre Dame policy, each Notre Dame computer user is responsible for his or her use of technology on campus. The integrity and secrecy of an individual's password is a key element of that responsibility. This Standard describes the University's requirements for acceptable password selection and maintenance. Its purpose is to reduce overall risk to the institution by helping computer users reasonably avoid security and privacy risks that result from weak password choices and to encourage attention to password secrecy.
NetID & E-mail Address Changes
The OIT will change an individual's NetID only under very limited circumstances, and only one time. Faculty and staff can create e-mail address aliases and change them as often as desired.
Operating System Level Access to Servers
The purpose of these standards is to specify operating system level access to pre-production servers, and strengthen access controls and oversight for production environments.
