Printing to Student Computer Labs, Residence Hall, & Campus Printers from Your Mac OS X Computer
A Few Things Before You Start
- If you have attempt to use the manual setup instructions and 10.6-specific drivers directly from the Xerox website, please share your test results by emailing printndmac@nd.edu
- In order to print from Mac OSX to the Pharos printers, the short username on your computer MUST be the same as your NetID. To see if this is the case, go to Apple > System Preferences > Accounts.
WARNING - DO NOT CHANGE SHORT NAME IF YOU HAVE FILEVAULT ENABLED
* In OS 10.5.x (Leopard), first click the lock icon in the lower left of the Account dialog and authenticate to your computer. Then, hold down your control button, click on your account name and choose Advanced Options.... Your short name is displayed in its own field. If it is not the same as your NetID, change it to match and click OK. You will need to logout and log back into your computer before proceeding.
* In OS10.4.x (Tiger), click on your account. Your short name is displayed below your primary username. Merely changing the short name from within this dialog will not change the way your Mac presents itself to the Pharos printers. Making the appropriate change requires the use of a special utility. If you are running Tiger on your Mac and your short name needs changing, contact your departmental support staff or, if it is an Apple notebook computer, bring it to the OIT Help Desk in room 128 of DeBartolo Hall for assistance.
- Download the Print@ND Software (Mac OS X) for Printing to Lab Printers, Residence Hall Printers,& Other Campus Printers.
- A file named printatndmac1_0.zip will download. Find the file in your Downloads folder and double-click on it to unzip the file.
- The zipped file will expand to a new installer file named printatndmac1_0.mpkg. Double-click on that file to launch the installer.
Manual Setup Instructions (Optional)
- If you ran the Print@ND Software utility referenced above you do not need to go through the following manual setup instructions.
- Before proceeding, you will need to know to which model printer you are printing. Click HERE to determine what printer is located in each residence hall/computer lab. All computer labs listed below have either Xerox Phaser 3600's or 5550’s for black and white printing. Computer lab color printers are Phaser 8560's. Residence Halls with printers have either a Black & White Phaser 3600 or 4510. Please note: some students report that 4500, 5500 and 8550 drivers appear to work with the 4510, 5550's and 8560's, respectively.
- You will need to download and install the Pharos Drivers from HERE.
Setup the Printer
- From Your Apple menu, select System Preferences
- Click on the Print & Fax icon.
- Click the plus sign (+) toward the lower left of the utility to add a new printer.
- Select the IP Printer option, choose the Protocol of Line Printer Daemon (LPD) and enter the information for the printer. As we have done in our example, it is also useful to change the Name of the printer to reflect the actual location of the printer. Please consult this table of Pharos Queue Names
- From the Print Using pulldown menu, select Xerox. Then select the correct printer description. In this case, the correct choice is Phaser 5500DT. (On OS10.5x, a.k.a. Leopard, click Print Using > Select a driver to use... and select the correct model).
- Click Add.
- Accept the default choices in the Installable Options by clicking Continue.
- The printer should now be listed in your available printers.
