Printing to Student Computing Labs, Residence Hall, & Campus Printers from Your Mac OS X Computer

A Few Things Before You Start

  1. In order to print from Mac OSX to the Pharos printers, the short username on your computer MUST be the same as your NetID. To see if this is the case, go to Apple > System Preferences > Accounts.

    * In OS10.4.x (Tiger), click on your account. Your short name is displayed below your primary username.

    * In OS 10.5.x (Leopard), hold down your control button, click on your account and choose Advanced Options.... Your short name is displayed in its own field.

Merely changing the short name from within these dialogs will not change the way your Mac presents itself to the Pharos printers. Making the appropriate change requires a special utility. If your short name needs changing, contact your departmental support staff or, if yours is a Apple notebook computer, bring it to the OIT Help Desk in room 128 of DeBartolo Hall for assistance.

  2. Before proceeding, you will need to know to which model printer you are printing. Click HERE to determine what printer is located in your residence hall. All Student Labs have either Black & White Phaser 4500's or 5500’s. Residence Halls with printers have either a Black & White Phaser 4500 or 5500.

  3. You will need to download and install the Pharos Drivers from HERE.

Setup the Printer

  1. From Your Apple menu, select System Preferences
    System Preferences
  2. Click on the Print & Fax icon.
    Print & Fax
  3. Click the plus sign (+) toward the lower left of the utility to add a new printer.
  4. Select the IP Printer option, choose the Protocol of Line Printer Daemon (LPD) and enter the information for the printer. As we have done in our example, it is also useful to change the Name of the printer to reflect the actual location of the printer. Please consult the table at the bottom of this page for a listing of the correct addresses and queue names for the various printers.
    Add Printer
  5. From the Print Using pulldown menu, select Xerox. Then select the correct printer description. In this case, the correct choice is Phaser 5500DT. (On OS10.5x, a.k.a. Leopard, click Print Using > Select a driver to use... and select the correct model).
    Printer Description
  6. Click Add.
  7. Accept the default choices in the Installable Options by clicking Continue.
  8. The printer should now be listed in your available printers.
    Finished
