Confirming Your Printer Settings on Mac OS X

  1. Open the Macintosh hard drive icon in the top right corner of your computer screen, double-click on the Applications folder, and then double-click on the Utilities folder. Find the Printer Setup Utility.

  2. Double-click on the Printer Setup Utility icon to launch it.
  3. In the Printer List window, if a Xerox printer is listed with a numeric IP address (such as 129.74.3.53 below), you must change the numeric IP address to the appropriate domain name. If a Xerox printer is listed with a descriptive name (such as 3rd Floor Printer below), you should verify that it also has a domain name, by clicking on Show Info in the toolbar. If the printer appears with a name ending in “nd.edu” your printer setup is properly configured.

  4. In the Printer Info window, look at the field titled “Printer Name.” If this field contains a numeric IP address (such as “129.74.3.53”), you must change the IP address to the appropriate domain name. If the Printer Name field contains a descriptive name, such as 3rd Floor Printer, but the Queue Name field contains a numeric IP address, see the following instructions for Changing a Printer’s IP Address to a Domain Name.

  5. If you do not know your printer’s domain name or need assistance setting up your printer, contact your departmental IT support person.

Changing a Printer’s IP Address to a Domain Name

The simplest way to change the IP address to a domain name is to delete the printer from the printer list and enter it again with a domain name. If you do not know your printer’s domain name or need assistance setting up your printer, contact your departmental IT support person.

  1. Choose the printer in the list and click the Delete button to remove that printer’s setup instructions. Then click the Add button.
  2. For OS 10.2.x, select [IP Printing] from the pull-down menu
For OS 10.3.x, select [IP Printing] from the first pull-down menu, and then select [LPD/LPR] from the Printer Type pull-down menu.
For OS 10.4.x, select [Line Printer Daemon – LPD] from the pull-down menu.
  3. Enter the domain name of the printer in the Address field (e.g., printer.building.nd.edu), and then press the tab key.
  4. You may leave the Queue name blank, or enter a descriptive name (for example, XeroxWCP90). Please note that if you are setting up to print using certain Document Center 200, 300, or some 400 series machines, you must enter ‘lp’ (lower case) and nothing else in the Queue name field. Check with your local support person if you are unsure about what to enter. For OS 10.2.x, be sure there is no check mark in the Default Queue Name check box.
  5. In the Name field, enter a descriptive name – such as the printer name – and enter its location in the Location field.
  6. From the Print Using pull-down menu, scroll down to select Xerox.
  7. In the Model list, scroll and select the model of your printer, and click on Add.
  8. You will see an Installable Options window. Check all of the options you’d like to use, and click Continue.
  9. The Printer Setup will close, and you will see the printer you have just added in the Printer List. Please note that the most recent printer added becomes the default printer. To change the default setting, select the desired printer in the Printer List and click on Make Default in the toolbar.
  10. Quit Printer Setup Utility.
