NetFile Access Rights
Within NetFile, users can setup specific access rights to facilitate in the sharing of files and folders. To do so, follow the instructions below:
- Make sure that you have Simple File Sharing turned off. To do so:
- Open My Computer.
- Go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
- On the View tab, make sure that Simple File Sharing is UNCHECKED.
- Click OK.

- You must have a mapped drive to NetFile on computer. If you don't
have a mapped drive:
- Open My Computer, go to the Tools menu, and select Map Network Drive. Windows will automatically assign the next available drive letter, but you may choose a different drive letter from the drop-down menu to suit your taste (we suggest using N:).
- In the Folder field, type the following path, substituting your
own NetID where our example gives asmith:
\\fs.nd.edu\~asmith
- Now, click on the link to Connect using a different user name.
- For your user name, enter: adnd\asmith (again, use your
own NetID) and enter your Notre Dame password.

- Click OK.
- You may choose whether or not to automatically reconnect to this drive at logon using the checkbox provided.
- Click Finish to complete the drive mapping.
You can now find your NetFile drive by opening My Computer. The drive letter is displayed last in the description, similar to: ~asmith on fs.nd.edu (N:)
- Go into My Computer, double-click on the drive you mapped your
NetFile space to (in this example, we will use the N: drive), then right-click
on the folder that you want to change the permissions on. Select to
Properties from the context menu.
- Then select the Security tab, and click the Add button.

- Type in the NetID you want to give permission to in the "Enter object
names to select" field. Click OK.
- Then a Password dialog will appear and enter your username as: ADND\NetID
and Password. Click OK.
- You will be returned to the Security tab. You should notice a new
user name listed in the upper portion of the dialog. You can customize
the permissions for each user name by selecting it from the list, and
then checking the permissions you wish for that user or group to have
in the lower section.
Important Notes: The user names may be listed with a string of alphanumeric characters that appear to be garbage or encrypted code-- this will not affect that selected NetID's ability to access the folder or file. The ADS-FilerAdmin and Domain Admin groups are there for administrative purposes - do not remove their access. For the www folder, the webserv group is necessary in order to people to view your web pages.
- Once you have all the permission set the way you prefer, click OK.
You have changed the permissions for that folder. If you have additional questions or problems, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 574-631-8111.
