Configuration Fair - Back To School 2008

What You Need

In order to connect to the Notre Dame network for the first time, be sure you have the following items:

  • Your NetID and password. If you do not have these, please visit: https://password.nd.edu
  • An Ethernet card and/or a Wireless network card: Most new computers come with an Ethernet card. Most laptops have both.
  • An Ethernet cable: An Ethernet cable looks a lot like a thick phone cable and is often, but not always, blue in color. The connectors at each end look like they would fit in a phone jack, but are too big and will only fit in an Ethernet jack.

If you need a network cable to connect your computer to the network, these and other computer supplies are available at the Computer Store, 103 IT Center. Cables are available in varying lengths.

Getting Connected

Setting up your computer at Notre Dame is relatively simple. Launch a web browser when you arrive on campus, register your computer and then follow the on-screen instructions.  Detailed instructions are available here.  Our goal is to make the process easy, so you can focus your attention on orientation activities and your academic studies.

During the registration process you'll be directed to a site that will help you protect your computer from viruses, get operating system updates, and learn how personal firewalls help protect your computer. This includes free anti-virus software that ND provides! BE SURE TO SECURE YOUR COMPUTER BY FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS LISTED!

Note: If you have both a wireless card and a regular Ethernet card (most laptops have both), you will need to register BOTH separately.

BTS Trivia: Last year only 5% of those registering their computer upon arrival for the Fall semester contacted the Help Desk for assistance.

Game Devices

Are you planning to bring a game system to ND? Although the Help Desk does not provide support for game devices, we have provided instructions for registering those devices for use on the residential network.

Configuration Fair

The Back to School Configuration Fair is designed to provide computing assistance for all Notre Dame students living in the residence halls. The Help Desk will offer extended hours and will have additional staff on hand to provide students with telephone and in-room assistance for the following:

  • Registering a Windows Vista or XP or Mac OS X computer on the Notre Dame network
  • Installing the latest operating system patches for Windows Vista/XP or Mac OS X
  • Installing Notre Dame provided anti-virus software
  • Installing Notre Dame provided anti-spyware software (these help reduce pop-ups and unwanted programs)
  • Minor troubleshooting when the above are not working properly

Yes!!! We will come to your room to assist you!
