Adding Whitepage Data to AD
Derek Owens stated that several current projects have software that harvest data from AD (e.g. Sharepoint). To meet the data requirements of these applications, some whitepage data will be added to AD. This data will include user name, display name, and preferred email address. Other fields may be added as needed.
Derek stated that the data will be updated in batches similar to account generation.
Also, users' EDS privacy settings will be honored. Derek stated that very few individuals have full privacy enabled. Most users of the privacy settings limit the use to masking their home addresses and phone numbers. Data marked ND-Only will be added to AD.
Connecting to ND-Secure / ND-Guest Interchangably
Several team members reported on difficulty and frustration with changing the wireless network configuration on Lab/Classroom laptops. Being able to easily change the configuration is needed to allow network access to Faculty/Staff vs guest users.
Don Padgett stated that this is a known issue and that the currently suggested work-around is to include a logout script that disposes credentials so a reboot is not needed.
Some team members stated that connecting to Nomad is also a work around, but will obviously not work when Nomad is disabled.
A suggestion was made to disable SSID broadcasts instead of disabling Nomad so that it still could be used. It was then stated that there are technical problems with turning off ssid broadcast.
Al Lemmon stated that NIC upgrade for driver support of WPA can be a problem for some older NICs.
On a related note, Sean Azelton stated that 802.1x schema extensions are currently being tested in AD.
Dan Rousseve will attend the next Windows Team meeting and answer questions and concerns.
Spyware Removal Methods
Jeff Morgan stated that newest versions of Antivirus 2008/9 malware and their variants are not being cleaned by McAfee or Windows Defender. Other team members have also experienced this. Some team members testing of MalwareBytes Antimalware has shown that this removes the offending apps successfully. This product is free for home use but not for commercial use. Don Padgett will reconvene the Malware Team and explore the feasibility of adding this package to our anti-malware arsenal. It would require an agreement with the vendor, approved by general council, facilitated by Mary Toll. The Malware Team will work with Mary if a decision is made to pursue further.
Team members were reminded that they should contact Mary before using any non university-licensed products.
