Cable in Residence Halls FAQs
Q: What is a “Dark Period”?
A: The ‘Dark Period’ will be a period of approximately 15 - 20 days as old
wires are removed and new cables are installed. During this time the
halls land telephone lines, Resnet, and cable will not function.
Q: Are there other networks affected during the dark period?
A: Yes. The vending swipe card system and Domer Dollars will be
affected.
Q: Will there be any internet access in the dorms during these
periods?
A: OIT will install temporary wireless systems into some strategic areas in
residence halls.
Q: Will the fire alarm system work?
A: Yes, but the students should pull the fire alarm if smoke or fire is seen and the fire department should be called if the alarm sounds.
Q: What about security for the dorms?
A: There will be an increased security presence in public areas during the
dark periods.
Q: Do students need to move furniture in their rooms?
A: Yes. Furniture and personal items will need to be moved 3 feet away
from conduits and jacks.
Q: How early will work begin?
A: Work will begin in student rooms at 8:00 am (when possible) by sub-contractors. There
will be 3 to 6 workers in a building at a time. It is possible the work may
continue into the early evening, but every effort will be made to avoid this.
Q: Will everything work again after the ‘Dark Period’?
A: YES! After the dark period phone, previous cable systems and Resnet
will be restored.
Q: When will wireless become available?
A: Shortly after the ‘Dark Period’ is over, wireless internet will be active.
Students using their own wireless routers should no longer use them as
it may disrupt the University provided wireless signal.
Q: When will cable be available?
A: It will be turned in August. It is important that students do not splice into
the lounge or hall staff live cable systems.
Q: Can I still use my satellite dish?
A: No. Dishes will no longer be allowed beginning with the Fall 2006
semester.
Q: I have heard the dorm phone service may change. Is this true?
A: Yes. Telephones will be removed in the dorm rooms. You will have the
option to have a phone in your room for an additional charge. With the
change in phone service, house phones will be placed in various locations of the student living space.
Q: How does someone reach students in buildings that are out of
service?
A: Students are encouraged to check their voice mail even though their
dorm is in the ‘Dark Period’. Email will be available as usual.
Q: Will we still be able to reach the Rectors?
A: Temporary telephone service will be made available to the rectors.
You will be able to contact Rectors for emergencies and other needs.
