Business vs. Personal Twitter

As with any communications tool, always consider your audience. The tricky thing about Twitter, is that you don't necessarily know WHO your audience is, but you do know who you represent. If you are representing your department, communicate in such a manner. If it's your personal account, you have more freedom about what you tweet, but remember that the information can potentially be found by anyone.  Be smart about what you post! Some examples:

Personal Tweets:

  • Just had lunch at Fazolis! I love these breadsticks!
  • I'm so tired of my neighbor's stupid dog
  • Anyone wanna come over and watch Star Trek tonight?

Business Tweets:

  • OITHelpDesk We've received reports of poor internet connectivity in LaFortune
  • OITHelpDesk We've just posted new instructions for configuring Outlook, check them out
  • OITHelpDesk Student accounts will be removed 60 days after graduation. Be sure to take your data with you!

Always remember, what you post on Twitter is on the internet and can potentially be found by anyone. Be smart about what you post!

Some examples of what NOT to tweet:

  • My boss drives me crazy! I wish I worked for someone else.
  • This guy Joe who sits next to me in the office is so stupid.
