Will my computer run Windows Vista?

Microsoft has published a Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to help you decide if your computer is ready to run Windows Vista.

Which versions of Windows Vista is Notre Dame licensed to distribute?

Notre Dame's Campus Agreement allows departments to purchase a volume license copy of Windows Vista Enterprise upgrade for use on Notre Dame owned computers. Notre Dame students, faculty, and staff who purchase Windows Vista upgrades under work-at-home use rights through the Notre Dame Computer Store for use on their own personal computers will receive a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.

At this time the OIT is not able to provide full support to faculty and staff, while we continue to test application compatibility. If you have a business need to obtain Windows Vista prior to the completion of that work, please contact your departmental IT support, or email the project manager, Denise Moser, to request it.

What are the differences between all the different versions of Windows Vista?

Microsoft has provided an excellent summary of the differences between the many versions of Windows Vista.

If I choose to install Windows Vista before the OIT offers complete support for it, what should I be aware of?

At this time, the OIT can offer the following advice for early Windows Vista adopters:

  • Do a complete data backup prior to installation, and do a clean install of the operating system; do NOT upgrade from a previous version of Windows.
  • As the project team has not completed testing all Notre Dame applications and services, some things may not work correctly in Windows Vista.
  • The OIT can only offer MINIMAL support for any problems or questions that arise for early adopters of Windows Vista.
  • If you are working with Notre Dame corporate data, sensitive data (such as social security numbers, credit card number, HIPAA protected information, financial data, etc.) - do NOT upgrade to Windows Vista until the project team has completed testing!

Do I have to upgrade to Office 2007 if I upgrade to Windows Vista?

No. You can continue to use Office 2003 on Windows Vista. In addition, you can run Office 2007 on Windows XP (Vista is not required).
