Sleigh the Scams This Holiday Season

Safe Online Shopping

The holidays are here which means sparkly lights, cozy drinks, way too many cookies, and of course online shopping. Scammers love this season just as much as you do, but for very different reasons. While you are searching for the perfect gifts, they are searching for the perfect moment to trick you. Here’s how to make sure they end up on the Naughty List where they belong.

Shady Shops That Look Picture Perfect

Some online shops are like holiday window displays. They look magical from the outside but there is nothing real behind the glass. These fake stores show off high quality photos, glowing five-star “reviews,” and festive banners that make everything feel legitimate. They appear on sketchy websites, sponsored social media ads, and even on trusted platforms like Amazon.

Here’s the secret. Amazon is trustworthy. Every seller on Amazon is not. Third-party sellers can pop up during the holidays with low prices and names like PerfectDealStore or HappyHolidayGoods. Their listings look polished, but the reviews sound identical and the prices are simply too good to be true. Social media shops do the same, appearing just long enough to take your money before disappearing like melted snow.

Red flags to watch for:

    • The store or seller name feels random or unfamiliar

    • Reviews sound copied, overly positive, or completely fake

    • Only stock photos or perfect “studio” images used

    • Contact information is vague or missing

    • Prices are dramatically lower than real retailers

    • The seller is “Just Launched” or the account is brand new

If the deal feels magical, the store seems too perfect, or the price is suspiciously low, trust your instincts. Real deals are good but scam deals are not.

The “Ends in 10 Minutes” Trick

Scammers love countdown timers. They know that urgency makes people act fast.

Holiday rule: If every normal retailer charges full price, and one mystery site is practically giving it away, that isn’t a sale. It’s bait. If the price on a product is dramatically lower than every real retailer, pause. Ask yourself why only this store is basically giving it away. Spoiler alert. It is probably not generosity.

“Your Package Is Delayed” and Other Holiday Lies

Scammers know you’re waiting for deliveries. They send fake shipping texts and emails to lure you into clicking. The link leads to a fake page that steals your information.

Always check shipping information directly on the retailer’s site or app. Never through a link in a random message.

Keeping Your Holidays Merry and Your Wallet Safe

    • Shop only on secure sites with “https” in the url

    • Turn on account alerts from your bank or credit card provider

    • Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi

    • Compare prices across real retailers before buying

These tiny steps make a big difference.

A Scam Free Season For You

The season should be full of joy, not mystery charges from sketchy shops with names you can’t pronounce. Slow down, trust your instincts, and remember that even Santa checks things twice.
