NetFile Storage Transition Underway

As the University’s teaching, learning and research initiatives advance, the file storage requirements of students, faculty and staff continue to evolve. These requirements include:

  • More storage space
  • Ability to collaborate globally
  • Reliable access to files on a multitude of devices

One of Notre Dame’s current network file storage solutions, NetFile (\\, is over 20 years old and does not adequately meet these new requirements. As a result, it will be decommissioned beginning Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

The Office of Information Technologies (OIT) identified Google Drive as the best storage solution to meet current usage, security and adaptability requirements. If you think Google Drive is not the right solution for you, please contact your departmental IT support staff or the OIT Help Desk to discuss other options that would best meet your needs.

Any individual files you saved in NetFile must be relocated by July 31. You may know NetFile as the “N” drive, individual network space, or some other drive name. Departmental accounts are not required to move at this time.

To assist you with this process, a migration tool will be available for you to use in early June. This tool will provide a convenient way to relocate your files from NetFile to Google Drive. You can even move your files from home--all you need is an Internet connection. You will receive an email confirmation when your files have been successfully relocated.

Watch your email in early June. The OIT will notify you when the migration tool is ready to use.

You may want to review your files beforehand to decide which ones you want to keep and which ones can be deleted. For help accessing your files in NetFile, follow these instructions.
