If you are teaching a course this fall, you’ll find many ways to help familiarize you with the new classroom technology and other teaching resources.
Hosted by Notre Dame Learning units (the Kaneb Center for Teaching Excellence and Office of Digital Learning) along with the OIT Teaching and Learning Technologies team, instructors can take advantage of all these valuable online sessions and resources.
- Open Office Hours: Drop-in sessions that focus on course design, media creation, teaching excellence and Sakai support. Registration not required.
- Introduction to Sakai: Designed to prepare you to teach your class with Sakai whether your class is in-person, online or a little of both. Registration required.
- Setting the Tone: Designed for graduate TAs and instructors, it will cover how to use the first day of class to establish norms for safety, conversations and community.. Registration required.
- Dual-mode Classroom Demonstration: Experience the dual-mode classroom capabilities from the student perspective. Demonstration followed by Q&A period. Registration required.
- Dual-mode Technology Workshop: A hands-on workshop designed to help you get comfortable with the technology in the classroom similar to the one in which you will be teaching.
- Various Teaching Resources: You’ll find a variety of recordings and materials from past workshops that can help you find the best tools to support your courses. There is also a self-paced mini-course on resilient teaching also available that is based on the same material as our workshops and playbook.

In addition, a new Classroom Assistant (CA) program was also launched to provide assistance in the classroom. This program features a staff of student workers who will provide tech support and facilitate remote student engagement in dual-mode classrooms.
Though not guaranteed, there will be a limited number of CAs available for fall courses that meet the following criteria:
- The course does not normally have TAs assigned to attend in person
- The course is taught in person (fully online courses are not eligible)
- Adding a CA does not violate the approved maximum safe occupancy of the classroom
Courses that focus on regular student interaction and discussion as part of the course design will receive priority in the event of high demand.
Requests for a CA are now being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Be prepared to provide course information including class location and schedule, current and maximum enrollments with this request.
